I was born in West Lafayette Indiana in 1966 while both of my parents attended Purdue University. My mother, a Hoosier by birth and breeding, was happy to follow her heart to my father’s childhood home in The South. So, there I was raised in Leesburg, “real” Florida: The Florida of Marjorie K. Rawlings, orange groves and johnboats.

I am a painter in my mind, but when you come from the South, telling folks you are going to get a degree in painting is like a dog that ‘just don’t hunt’. Faced with the decision of what to study in college, I discovered architecture and design. In design, I found the passion that gets me up every day and keeps me awake many nights.

After graduating from North Carolina State University, Joe and I moved to Fairfield County in Connecticut and started our first experiment in design-build. Despite having degrees in design and architecture, experience in building, and youthful energy, we realized how much we still had to learn. So I decided to enroll in a graduate program in Architecture.

We settled in Seattle in 1990, where I attended the University of Washington. J.A.S. Design-Build was officially established in 1992. Since then, we have built many projects, learned many lessons, and
